MAQUOKETA, Iowa — Maquoketa police arrested a couple
Tuesday night after police found hallucinogenic mushrooms growing in
their basement.
It's the first time such a bust has been made in Maquoketa, according to police.
Maquoketa Police Chief Brad Koranda said seven drug-related charges have been filed against both Sara Good, 35, and Brent Good, 33, both of 106 E. Maple, Maquoketa.
Police conducted a search warrant of the home, which is 1,000 feet from the Maquoketa Middle School, on Tuesday. They found 49 grams of the mushrooms that contain psilocybin. Koranda said the mushrooms create a psychedelic experience, similar to taking LSD.
Also found were 15-watt grow lights over seven plastic bins that contained straw and fertilizer. The mushrooms were in various growing stages in the bins. He said police found 30 mason jars containing spores, which is the beginning process of growing mushrooms.
The couple also had mushrooms drying in a padlocked room in the upstairs of their home, he said. A minor child lived at the home, according to the chief.
"This is the biggest bust of this kind for us," Koranda said. "We've never had any arrests for mushroom growing."
During the search, officers found a baggie of marijuna between the mattress and box springs of the couple's bed. A baggie of marijuana also was found in the kitchen cabinet. Nine Xanax pills were found, and no prescription was found for them. Drug paraphernalia also was found.

A preliminary hearing for the pair has been set for 9 a.m. Nov. 12.
