 UPDATE:
A jail escapee was captured after he was spotted driving a stolen car in Maquoketa.

On June 16, 2014 a Jackson County Jail inmate, 32-year-old Brandon Bodenhofer, escaped from a deputy when being returned to jail after a court appearance.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, on Saturday, July 5, 2014 shortly before 7 p.m., a deputy saw Bodenhofer driving a “stolen car in a reckless manner” and tried to stop him. Bodenhofer fled “at a high rate of speed” heading southbound on S. Main Street, leaving Maquoketa.

Deputy Russ Long, the officer who originally tried to stop Bodenhofer, and Sgt. Darin Risinger went after the escapee for nearly two miles when Bodenhofer drove into a ditch, striking a barbed-wire fence near 1st Street and the Jackson and Clinton county line, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

Police said Bodenhofer tried to flee on foot, but the officers caught him.

Bodenhofer was charged with felony attempting to elude, operating without owners consent, driving while barred, unlawful possession of a prescription drug, and reckless driving and speeding, said a spokesperson from the sheriff’s office. He also had numerous outstanding arrest warrants from when he escaped.

He was being held in the Jackson County Jail.

UPDATE:

A chase on Sunday ended three weeks of searching for a suspect who escaped custody.
In a release, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office states a Maquoketa Police officer and a deputy responded around 6:54 p.m. Saturday for a report of an escapee driving a stolen car on the south side of Maquoketa. The officer and deputy attempted to stop 32-year-old Brandon Bodenhofer, of Baldwin, on South Main Street.

Law enforcement chased Bodenhofer for nearly 2 miles before he drove into a ditch and hit a barbed wire fence near First Street at the line between Clinton and Jackson counties.
The officer and deputy apprehended Bodenhofer after he tried to run away from the scene of the crash. He’s charged with attempting to elude, a Class D felony. He’s also charged with unlawful possession of a prescription drug, and operating without owner’s consent as a result of the chase.
Bodenhofer was arrested with several outstanding warrants for his arrest, including a felony warrant for escaping custody on June 16 for escaping from a deputy while being transported back to the Jackson County Jail after a court appearance.

News Story from QC Times:

MAQUOKETA, Iowa — Policies on handcuffing inmates when Jackson County deputies walk them across the street from the jail to the courthouse will be changed after a man ran away twice this week.

As of Tuesday night, the Jackson County Detention Center inmate had eluded authorities since running away from officers Monday morning.

Sheriff Russ Kettmann said deputies still are seeking Brandon Bodenhofer, 32, of Baldwin.
"He's not dangerous," Kettmann said. "I expect we'll find him soon. We always do."
Bodenhofer has been in and out of the Detention Center numerous times over the years, mostly on theft and drug charges, records show.

Deputy Steve Schroeder took Bodenhofer to the Jackson County Courthouse, which is located across the street from the jail, Monday morning. Bodenhofer was facing drug charges and interference with official acts when he ran away from Maquoketa police at 6:30 a.m. Officers apprehended Bodenhofer after a short foot chase in Maquoketa. He was accused of stealing a car and had methamphetamine in his possession, authorities said.
Magistrate Brad Boffelli ordered Bodenhofer to be held in jail on $7,500 cash bond. As Schroeder was walking Bodenhofer back to the jail, the man took off running and Schroeder was unable to catch him. Bodenhofer was not wearing handcuffs or shackles.
Maquoketa police and the Iowa State Patrol joined deputies in their search for Bodenhofer with no success.

Because of the escape, Kettmann said policies will be changed, but, he admitted, "We screwed up."
"We have been lax in handcuffing prisoners," the sheriff said. "We have plenty of handcuffs, and all prisoners will be cuffed now, no matter what the charge."
Kettmann said authorities had never had trouble with Bodenhofer trying to escape before, so they did not expect it Monday.

"While not handcuffing prisoners may not have been right, we thought it was OK and didn't have a problem. Things have changed," the sheriff added.
Kettmann asked for anyone who sees Bodenhofer to call the sheriff's office. He emphasized that the suspect is not considered dangerous.
There are warrants out for Bodenhofer on new charges of interference with official acts, escape and burglary in the third degree
