MAQUOKETA, Iowa — Following a lengthy work session Tuesday morning, Jackson County Supervisors approved hiring Corey Kettmann as a new Sheriff's deputy.
Kettmann is the son of Sheriff Russ Kettmann. That was the issue for supervisors.

State law says the sheriff cannot appoint a relative. But after consulting with Jackson County Attorney Sara Davenport, the supervisors determined they have the authority to make the appointment.
During a work session Tuesday, Sheriff Kettmann recommended the supervisors hire his son, Corey. The sheriff said Corey Kettmann tested first in the most recent Civil Service exam for county deputies. There was one other person who also passed all the tests. That person was not named.
The sheriff said his son has 12 years experience in police work, mostly with the Bellevue Police Department. He said he is an arson investigator and speaks Spanish fluently. He graduated from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy and currently is working for the Bellevue utilities company.

ReplyDeleteI understand City may have great qualifications...however..it is never good business sense to have the fox guarding the hen house...it opens questionable motives and invites close scrutiny of the sheriff, the department and the county...I feel this was a bad decision on the part of the supervisors...by the way..what is Cory's starting pay? This wasn't mentioned...
ReplyDeleteAgain..big fingers..Cory may have great qualifications..
